Before taking ENG 390, I mostly thought professional writing only applied to business jobs or office careers. During the semester, I realized that professional communication is actually part of many different areas of life. People use professional writing in school, jobs, organizations, and even everyday situations online.

One example of this is email communication. Emails may seem simple, but tone and wording can affect how messages are received. A professional email should be clear, respectful, and organized. Throughout this course, I became more aware of how communication style changes depending on the situation and audience.

Social media can also connect to professional writing. Even though social media is often informal, posts and comments can still create impressions about someone. Because so much communication now happens online, people need to think carefully about what they post publicly. Professionalism is not limited only to resumes and formal papers anymore.

Another thing I learned is that writing professionally does not always mean sounding extremely formal. In many situations, readers prefer communication that is simple and direct. Professional writing is often more effective when ideas are easy to understand instead of overly complicated.

I also realized that professional writing skills will likely be important in almost any career field. Even jobs that are not focused on writing still involve communication through reports, emails, presentations, or instructions. Because of this, learning how to communicate clearly is a useful skill to develop.

Overall, ENG 390 helped me better understand how writing connects to real-world situations. Professional communication appears more often in daily life than I originally realized, and this course helped me become more aware of how important clear writing can be in different environments.
